10 facts about Bull Snakes

Sir Hiss is our Bull Snake (also known as a Gopher Snake; Pituophis catenifer sayi) and here are 10 interesting facts about Bull Snakes:

1. This snake is sometimes mistaken for a rattlesnake due to its reaction when cornered. It most resembles the Western Diamondback Rattler (Crotalus atrox).

2. They have been known to grow up to 2.5 metres in length, 1.8 metres is more common.

3. Bull snakes can be found throughout America, northern Mexico and parts of Canada.

4. Adult Bull snakes can weigh around 3.6kg

5. They have a varied diet of small rodents, birds, eggs, amphibians and smaller snakes.

6. Bull snakes have a very loud hiss, which is used as a defence mechanism.

7. It is one of the largest and most often seen snakes in Nebraska.

8. Birds of prey, such as hawks and owls are the Bull snakes biggest predator.

9. During the colder months the bull snake will hibernate underground below the frost level.

10. The Bull snake can be found in grasslands, open woodlands and farmlands.

    I just got out of the shower and my husband found a snake in the tub . I live in Minnesota and the temps have been -30 wind chill. We do heat our old farmhouse with wood. Where could this 8 inch long bull snake have come from?
